Roof load checker
Check whether a roof tent and your roof kit are within your vehicle's limits, first for driving and then for sleeping in the tent. Every number comes from you.
A guide, not advice. Check your maker's figures.
Worked example
These are made-up figures to show the maths. They aren't for any real vehicle or tent.
- Vehicle dynamic roof load: 75 kg
- Vehicle static roof load: 300 kg
- Bars: 5 kg
- Tent: 60 kg
- Two occupants: 80 kg and 70 kg
- Bedding left in the tent: 5 kg
Driving: 5 + 60 = 65.0 kg on the roof, against the 75 kg dynamic load. Result: pass, with a margin of 10.0 kg.
Sleeping: 65.0 kg + 5 kg bedding + 150 kg of people = 220.0 kg, against the 300 kg static load. Result: pass, with a margin of 80.0 kg.
How it works
Driving: bars + tent + other roof kit, compared with your vehicle's dynamic roof load. If you enter a roof bar or rail rating, tent + other kit is also compared with that. Exactly at the limit counts as a pass.
Sleeping: the driving total + bedding + the weight of everyone in the tent, compared with your vehicle's static roof load.
If you don't have a static figure, the sleeping result is unknown. We don't guess it from the dynamic figure, and we don't use multipliers: ask your vehicle maker or dealer for the static figure.
Where to find your figures
The dynamic roof load is usually in your handbook. Static figures are often not published. Our guide will a roof tent fit my car? explains both and what to ask your maker.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between dynamic and static roof load?
Dynamic roof load is the limit while the vehicle is moving. Static roof load is the limit when it's parked, which matters when people sleep in a roof tent. Your vehicle maker sets both.
Why does the tool say unknown?
You left the static roof load blank. The tool won't estimate it, so ask your vehicle maker or dealer before sleeping in the tent.
Is my data saved?
No. The tool runs in your browser. Your figures go into the page address only so you can share the result.
